More Than One Still

When we lived in Virginia, my neighbor, Lisa made some homemade vanilla and being the great gal she is, she gave me some in a cute little green bottle.  Not only did I use it, but I also wanted to know how to make my own.  Explaining how to make it using vanilla beans and alcohol (some use Vodka, some use Bourbon) and letting it age, I was hooked on the process.

I STILL(get it?) make my own vanilla extract. 
 It doesn't take much.

Have you ever tried to make your own vanilla extract?


  1. not only never tried it, never even knew it could be done... since i don't cook or bake with it, could be the reason.... rubbing alcohol?

  2. I wouldn't use enough of it to make it worth while.

  3. 'still' - i'd be sipping it, i'm afraid! :)

  4. Sounds like a fun thing to try, I bet it tastes different from the store bought kind.

  5. I always have a vanilla pod in the store cupboard and use the little seeds as and when. After the seeds are all gone I put the remains of the pod into a jar with sugar. Then I use the sugar to bake with, and it's already vanilla flavoured.

  7. This is very impressive! I didn't even know it could be homemade. So do you bake a lot and what do you put it in?

  9. I had someone give me some last year that they'd made -- I love the flavor, and don't think I'll ever buy it again!

  11. I've read about making your own vanilla. I wouldn't even know where to find vanilla beans. So did you use vodka or bourbon to make yours?
