The Red Sea

At the beach in RI a few weeks ago, we all decided to head to great clam shack located right on First Beach.  Sure we were expecting great lobster and clam rolls (which we got!!), but one thing we were not expecting was to see

A RED SEA

Apparently it has to do with the seaweed as it does not span the entire beach...just a localized area that can be seen while enjoying delicious lobster and clam rolls!

Of course, gazing out to the far left and right,
the water shows no signs of the red seaweed.

Have you ever seen anything like this?

Not around here, and "around here" is basically the same area. Weird! But I have heard of it! Must put a real damper on people's beach days!

I've seen this phenomenon on TV documentaries. We're experiencing a blue green algae in one area of our inland lake and I just read that dogs swimming in it have become I'll and one has died.

it is common here, sometimes the seaweed is red, sometimes brown and we all pray for no red tide that kills the fish and stinks up the beach

that's pretty neat.

I was curious.. so I looked it up...

Red algae are, not surprisingly, red, reddish or purplish in color. There are about 6,000 species of red algae and they are protists in the phylum Rhodophyta. Red algae species range from simple one-celled organisms to complex, multi-celled, plant-like organisms. Red algae get their energy from photosynthesis. One thing that distinguishes red algae from other algae is that their cells lack flagella.....

Glad they aren't dangerous.. Thank you for linking into Nature Notes.

Very cool, your "red sea." I've heard reports of such a thing, but I haven't seen it myself.

Very weird indeed! I heard a story before about a Red Sea being parted....but that's it....never heard anything about it again for a couple thousand years!
