Call Me Stupid

So, we all know that I'm hurting but I have to tell you that I'm MUCH BETTER than I WAS.  Crap!  It's been since the Prez returned home and that was back on January 4th.  Fighting my cold off with good old Vick's Vapor Rub and the Prez' homemade chicken soup, it lasted only a week.  But what a week it was.

Sure, I got up each morning, made my coffee and was able to get myself dressed so I could at least go outside in the morning with the kids.  Actually, a few days ago, I was feeling pretty damn good, so I thought I'd walk up and down the road.  I HAD TO...I NEEDED TO.  Something inside just made me put their leashes on and head out the driveway with them, muttering we're just going to go slow and we'll be fine as Moon and Copper wagged their tails joyfully.   What was I thinking?????

The rest of that day, I hurt like I did the previous week!  So, back on the floor doing slow stretches, noticing that I got shooting pain when I sat.  Then my SIL and BIL came over to get some of that wood from the tree that fell.  While they were here, my SIL told me of her episode with a nerve...her sciatic nerve.  We stood as we had our tea that day, because that was the only way I was more comfortable...lying down or standing.

Listening to her story and her description of her pain, I thought it kind of sounds like what I'm experiencing, except for the intense pain in my glute and outer thigh but it's possible.  After they left that day, I later sent her a text asking her how long it took to recover.  Six weeks was her answer!

Meanwhile, my daughter spent that entire day in the Emergency Room, ended up being admitted and having gall bladder surgery the following day.  Not being able to jump in the car to go see her because of  a common cold and over worked ligaments and muscles was horrible.

So my question to you is simple:

How long does it take to recover...when you're old?

Aha...all I need is a plan, I thought.  I have to have a plan!

It takes FOREVER! The older I get, the longer it takes. Sorry, I know, that's know what you want to hear. But man oh man, it's true.
I hope your daughter is doing fine with her surgery. And pass the Vick's... I've been using it a lot this past week or so myself.

Pass the Vicks this way too! We should all by stock! I rubbed it on my nose, my Mom said she put it on her throat, Lordy if it isn't one thing it's another. i'm 53 and it seems like I haven't been "normal" for a couple of years. I don't think we ever mend!!!
Hey JP I think it's time to visit a Doc. I waited a couple of months to visit one because my foot was hurting like crazy back in October. Well the pain started going up in my leg, then in my hip. I went to a foot Dr. got a couple of shots, and that was that! I've been fine since...well except for this cold. Pass the tissues please.

I think it's time to see a doctor. Not about the cold that takes 7 days, lots of rest, chicken soup, and fluids. I have found I don't get colds if I wash my hands about 15 times a day. I haven't had a cold in 10 years. Knock on wood! Stay away from children. Those little creatures are germs magnets. Feel better soon.

Oh yes, to the commentator who said to wash hands 15 times a day. That works.

BUT what happens when you hands dry up and break apart and you are left with stumps and you can't wipe your still drippy nose.

Oh, that's right. You still have 2 sleeves! I keep forgetting.

Oh, that's right. I am getting old so I forget stuff.

Getting old sucks! But glad I am not alone.

So sorry you're not feeling well JP. All four of us in my house have had the "cold" and is has taken more like 12 days ton really start feeling human again. As far as your back goes, I would go see a chiropractor ASAP. They can and do work miracles.
Hoping you have a speedy recovery.

Not much you can do about sciatic (hmmm, wasn't I just mentioning that?) but icing may help!

Usually it takes me a long time to recover from a cold. I usually end up going to the doctor for an antibiotic because it gets that bad. Lately I've been practicing medicine without a license! lol I've gotten deep into herbal remedies and have discovered that Echinesea with Goldenseal in liquid dropper form works wonders for me. I've been taking it almost daily which you are only supposed to take it 2 weeks and off 2 weeks so I try to do that but if I need it I take it.

For the sciatica when I get down I can get down for a good month where I can barely walk or even move. I try to watch what I do to make sure I don't get that way again because it isn't fun standing up and not being able to and not being able to make your legs walk. If I feel it coming on bad I will get in my whirlpool bath and have those jets hitting on the sore spots in my legs and back. I'll keep moving my legs over those jets until those sore spots are gone. A good moist heating pad is good to use too. There are some simple exercises that my physical therapist taught me to do and I do those daily after I shower. Heat seems to loosen me up.

Hope this helps! I'll see if I can find some picture explanation of the exercises I do and send them to you.

I still hurt from my fractured vertebra from last May and I have whiplash injuries from the car accident of Sept. 2010 that still hurt, so it does take time. How much would depend, I guess on the type of injury, where it is located and, well, yes, your age.

I wish I knew the answer--What has happened to you, has happened to me...We're such fragile little flowers sometimes, aren't we? Take care!!!

JP -- all of us older gals know -- sometimes, it never really heals. There's no magic pill, unfortunately.

I find with my back and disk problems that flare up when I do something stoopid is just take it easy for a couple of days till it feels somewhat better.

You may have to change what you do, or at least, how you do things to prevent flare-ups. But I would see a doctor if it's debilitating.
Take care. :)

heat to loosen...then stretching...even the tennis ball can help (mentioned in a previous post comment)...with the sciatica.
yeah, it DOES take a while...and KEEP stretching like you have it...even after the pain is gone!

seems as if no matter how much we work to stay in shape...those aches & pains just seem to creep up on us...as we get OLDER! ugh! haha

I hope your daughter is doing better.

I think I had that pain when I was younger and going to a gym. It went away on it's own, but took a while.

JP, recovery time from a cold seems to vary depending on the sex, men seem to take longer and are more verbal about their ailments it seems. Grenville has a nasty sinus drip and is coughing badly. Like the Prez, I made a large pot of chicken soup for us. Even if it doesn't cure the symptoms, it tastes good! Sorry to hear about the continuing back/leg aches...a friend is going through similar issues and therapy is taking much longer than she thought it would (sorry for that downer news). Hope all went well with your daughter's surgery.
