Jane...A Story

As you can well imagine, moving can make you see things in a new light.  I've been going through "stuff" in my house, "stuff" I've collected over the years, "stuff" that was given to me from a thoughtful someone...deciding what to take, what not to take.  In fact, what I've found is that initially it saddened me to pick and choose (which is really hard!).  Now when I walk into a room and look around, the memories associated with many of the things are bringing chuckles and smiles and I'm finding that things are just things and it's the memories that really matter!

Jane & The Family

Remember when I told you about picking out paint and being a "plain Jane?"  Well, while collecting all the bunnies I had upstairs and preparing then for the wash, one of them, a gift from my son, really grabbed my attention.  She had a paper tag attached to her with a small piece of twine.  Removing it as I readied her for the washing machine, I couldn't help but read her story:

" Hi, my name is...
Jane "Not So Plain" Lopsmith
Me and my brother Joey are orphans.  Don't be sad, we're not!  We're just thankful that so many of the other Lops are kind to us..."

Jane "Not So Plain" Lopsmith

Her story reminded me of my sister and I and , although we were not orphans per se our childhood was far from normal.  Meeting so many "Lops" like yourselves has made my life special.
So, to all you "lops" out there in bloggerville, thanks for being kind to me!!  Each time I read your comments, I am amazed at how wonderful you all are.  For that bit of kindness, I thank you...:)

Sorting is never easy. We have been trying that for a long time here and it is getting easier.

Take a picture, have a book of memories...takes less space and you can always pull it out and relive the memories.

It is hard to give things up. We too are trying to downsize our possessions in preparation for the inevitable. I take lots of pictures and write stories about them (sound familiar?) and then I feel better about letting the items go to other family members. They are, after all, just things.

I used to think I needed to have 'things' because of their memories, but when we moved to where we are now, and those things were packed up, I found that I didn't need them. It's very freeing isn't it?

My husband and I have no plans to move for many years (although plans can change I know), but we have already begun the process of down sizing this year. We have gotten rid of alot of stuff and several pieces of furniture. It is a very freeing feeling. While I have a lot of stuff I am still attached to, when I started looking around and sorting through it, there was a ton of stuff I could give away ... and have done so. The "space" it has made in our lives feels wonderful.

You're so right -- it's the memories. When I had to really downsize from a six-bedroom house, I took pictures of lots of my 'stuff' and then put them in an album (this was before digital etc.) My captions were on the back of photos and then transferred when I had more time. They evoke all the same memories and collect much less dust!
