Then there's Buddy and Nancy. Now here's an interesting couple if ever I saw one. A tall, handsome man from the coal mines of West Virginia. He tells stories about working in the mines with his Daddy and other relatives and what it was like to live there. He had a very rough life. Perhaps that's why he has a heart as big as the sky. But don't' cross him! He's a "pole cat" if you know what I mean. He can hold a grudge. He loves to have a good time...always smiling and giving hugs freely. Now, when I met Nancy, I was really surprised. She was a soft spoken, rather shy and very fragile looking. However, then she told me that was related to the Dalton Gang and one of the Hatfield's or McCoys and I began to think twice about her. She's a little whippersnapper is disguise! However, even though I somehow always remember Nancy's heritage and try to always be on my best behavior when I'm around them, I consider them "THE GOOD."
Lets move on to Charles and Grace next. When I met Charles, he was about 6'5" and must have weighed well over 300 lbs. A large man who retired from the service...a General, I think. Now Grace was one of those typical "southern" women. You know the type, always looked nice no matter what time of the day it was. She'd have on her short sleeved sweater, slacks, with a necklace, earring and bracelet that all matched and she always had her make-up on and wore lots of perfume. Not exactly my style, but hey...I'm the damn Yankee, remember?
However, Grace began telling me stories of what it was like here on the road when they first moved in. That was was before THE BAD and THE UGLY moved in. She told me how her goats got out and she went to go "round 'em up." She (are you ready for this?) threw her shotgun over her shoulder and headed out down the road towards my house. "Rifle?" I said, "Gracie, why the rifle?" I'll never forget her answer. She said rather succinctly, "Well, JP, you never know who you're going to find here on the road." I responded quickly, "But, Gracie, it is a public road." "Well sure it is, but strangers have o business here...now do they?" I decided from that point, to have a good relationship with Gracie and as it turns out, we did! God rest his soul, Charles passed away this past summer shortly after they put their place here on the market and relocated to Nebraska to be closer to family. In my eyes, with or without her rifle, they are "THE GOOD."
