Balloon Flower (Platycodon Grandiflorus):
Large star shaped flowers of deep blue-violet, pink or white early to mid-summer
18-36 inches tall
Half to full sun
Well drained soil
Inflated (like balloons) buds open into a cup-shaped pointed star.
Growth is slow to moderate.
Can vary from clump-forming to columnar.
It is slow to emerge in spring so I surrounded it with early spring bulbs (mini daffs, grape hyacinths). Take care not to hoe it down during spring cleanup.
Deadheading prolongs bloom.
Early pinching of some or all stems will delay blooming.
Plant self-sows easily; seedlings are quite variable.
